It is estimated to affect about 10% of women of reproductive age are affected according to World Health Organisation, but noted to also occur in menopause. Many different predisposing factors are thought to be responsible for the cause ranging from hormonal (oestrogen), backflow of menstrum called retrograde menstruation to molecular biology (stem cell) theory to mention but a few.
The term Endometriosis refers to presence of tissues which are the main inner lining of the uterus implanting outside the uterus, this can be found in the fallopian tubes, ovaries, pelvic cavities, on the intestinal wall, liver, lung and in rare occasions in the brain.
It causes chronic inflammation reaction in the tissue leading to scarification. This is exhibited by forming adhesions and fibrosis.
It can be asymptomatic or symptomatic. Symptoms you can complain of include heavy menstrual period or bleeding between periods, severe painful menstrual periods, nausea constipation, abdominal bloating, chronic pelvic pain, painful sexual intercourse which can also occur afterwards, pain while urinating or defecating, delay or difficulty in getting pregnant. Psychologically you can be anxious or depressed.
The presence of endometriotic cyst in areas of reproductive region decreases the fertility potentials. Pregnancy is achievable. It is important you inform your Physician on your clinical problem for optimal treatment. Treatment protocols are individualised ranging from medication to surgical.
